this is particularly interesting because i’ve recently been reading a book on costuming the beijing opera. the tassel fringing on the sleeves and cloud collar would highlight movement (and therefore emotion). red is a particularly good colour for women (as well as a nationalistic one). the gold couching looks like peacock feathers, as does her headdress, which could mean a phoenix, the chinese symbol for femininity. also, although it doesn’t resemble any particular item of clothing i recognise, it follows the chinese aesthetic that clothing should be voluminous because showing the outline of the body is vulgar.
of course when half the competition is in bikinis it’s more of a novelty than anything else.
